Jumba La Mtwana

Jumba La Mtwana Ruins is located north of Mombasa 4 km from the town of Mtwapa. Jumba La Mtwana literally translates to "The House of Slave" in Kiswahili even though little is known about the history of the settlement and who the original settlers were. The site was unearthed in 1972 by James Kirkland. The ruins consist of mosques, living quarters, a whale and a kitchen.  It is believed the settlement dated back to the 14th century and was later abandoned in the 15th century.
